Fitzroy Heslop

Fabio is a British drum and bass DJ and producer.
He is celebrated as one of the pioneers of the drum and bass genre, often alongside his longtime collaborator, Grooverider.
Together, they have been instrumental in shaping the UK's electronic music scene over the past three decades.

Fabio's career commenced in the mid-1980s on the Brixton-based pirate radio station Phase One.
It was during this time that he adopted the moniker "Fabio," inspired by a conversation about baby names.
He introduced himself as "DJ Fabio" on air, and the name has remained ever since.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Fabio and Grooverider gained prominence by performing at influential club nights such as Rage at Heaven in London.
Their innovative sets were pivotal during the acid house explosion, and they played a significant role in the evolution of breakbeat hardcore into what is now recognized as drum and bass.

Beyond live performances, Fabio has made substantial contributions to radio broadcasting.
He and Grooverider hosted shows on Kiss FM from 1994 to 1997 before transitioning to BBC Radio 1.
There, they initially led the "One in the Jungle" show and subsequently their own program starting in 1998, which played a crucial role in bringing drum and bass to a broader audience.

In addition to his DJ and radio endeavors, Fabio founded the record label Creative Source, further influencing the genre by promoting new talent and releasing seminal tracks.
He is also known for pioneering a subgenre of drum and bass called "liquid funk," characterized by its melodic and soulful elements, offering a smoother alternative to the harder styles prevalent in the scene.

Fabio's enduring impact on electronic music is evident through his continuous performances, radio shows, and contributions to the genre's development.
